CARY, NC – Following a loss in their series opener Friday night, the William Peace University baseball team closed out a three-game set against Ferrum College with a Saturday afternoon doubleheader. The Pacers evened the series with a 4-2 win in game one but dropped the rubber match, 3-1.
Game One: William Peace 4, Ferrum 2Christian Neal (2-1) went the distance for WPU, struck out 12 and gave up two runs on seven hits, as the Pacers went on to win game one, 4-2.
Mikey Anerton went 2-for-3 at the place with two RBIs and a run scored.
Tyler Klinedinst finished with two hits and an RBI, while
Easton Payton added a hit, scored twice and drove in
Brian Willis, who singled to lead off the fifth.
Trey Hogan and
Will Cunningham chipped in with one hit apiece.
Cliff Alexander (2-2) turned in a solid performance but was pinned with the loss. He allowed four runs on eight hits and seven strikeouts.
Lane Deaver scored in the sixth and was the only Ferrum player to register multiple hits. Jake Martin was plunked in the third and eventually scored on a Ty Comer RBI groundout.
Game Two: Ferrum 3, William Peace 1The Pacers notched eight hits in game one but only managed two in the second game. Ferrum scored two in the third and another in the fifth to take the series with a 3-1 win.
Both hits for WPU (8-13, 1-5 USAS) came in the fifth inning.
Alex Scott doubled and moved to third on Klinedinst's third hit of the day. Scott scored on an RBI groundout from Neal.
Wes Dumford (0-3) was tacked with the loss, surrendering two runs on four hits in four innings of work.
Chase Roupp tossed the next three and gave up one run on two hits.
Kyle Vincent and
Mike Sgroi closed it out with a scoreless frame apiece.
Dillon Weaver picked up the win for the Panthers (13-7, 5-1 USAS), holding the Pacers to the lone run and two hits in the fifth. Alex Brown pitched a scoreless seventh, Hunter Peck struck out the side in the eighth and Jared Talley pitched the ninth for his seventh save of the season.
Jake Martin and Clay Massie both finished with two hits for Ferrum. Martin scored twice on a pair of RBI hits from Massie in the third and fifth innings.
The WPU baseball team will be back in action this weekend, traveling to Methodist University for a three-game series starting Friday at 7:00 p.m.
