CARY, NC – The William Peace University baseball team was back at the USA Baseball National Training Complex Monday afternoon, improving to 7-7 with a pair of wins over Eastern University. The Pacers took game one, 5-4, before holding on for an 8-7 win in game two.
Game One: William Peace 5, Eastern University 4Eastern rallied to tie the game at four, scoring three runs in the top of the seventh, but for the second time in three days, the Pacers came through with a 5-4 win in walk-off fashion.
Easton Payton singled to lead off the bottom of the seventh.
Mikey Anerton moved him to second with a sac bunt, and then
Cullen Cicotte delivered a two-out double that brought Payton home to end the game.
Cicotte was the only Pacer with multiple hits, going 2-for-4 with three RBIs. Payton and Anerton both scored in the bottom of the fifth on Cicotte's RBI single through the left side.
Tyler Klinedinst added an RBI base hit, plating
Derek Beale, who doubled with two outs in the bottom of the fourth.
Mike Sgroi (1-1) earned the win, tossing the seventh inning in relief of starter
Chase Roupp. Roupp allowed four runs on five hits, three walks and six strikeouts before running out of gas in the seventh.
Joe Clancy (0-1) was pinned with the loss, while Angelo Kelly led Eastern at the plate with a pair of hits and a run batted in.
Game Two: William Peace 8, Eastern University 7The Pacers scored four in the second and three more in the fourth before holding on to win, 8-7.
Payton set the table with a 3-for-3 game, two runs scored and an RBI.
Alex Scott finished with two hits, two runs and two RBIs, while Anerton added two hits and scored twice. Beale also had two hits and drove in a run.
Braxton Lamm (1-1) picked up his first win of the season, giving up five runs (four earned) on seven hits, two walks and five strikeouts in six innings of work. Eastern threatened again in their final at bat, until
Zach Geller came in to earn the save.
Anthony Vlahovic (0-1) was tacked with the loss, surrendering four earned on six hits and a walk in two innings pitched. Nine hit players for Eastern recorded a hit.
The WPU baseball team will be back in action this weekend, opening USA South play with a three-game series at North Carolina Wesleyan.
