Pacers Drop Two at #12 Christopher Newport

NEWPORT NEWS, VA – The William Peace University softball team hit the road for the first time this season for a doubleheader against no. 12 ranked Christopher Newport University.  The Pacers lost 12-4 in game one before dropping game two, 1-0, despite an impressing outing from Freshman Kelsey Durham.

Game One: Christopher Newport 12, William Peace 4
Trailing 6-0, WPU cut their deficit in half with a three-run top of the fourth after the Pacers loaded the bases with no outs.  CNU answered with six in the bottom half of the inning though on their way to a 12-4 win.

Heather McLean was the only Pacer with multiple hits going 2-for-3 with a run scored and an RBI. Morgan Farmer hit her third dinger of the year, a solo shot in the bottom of the fifth.  Morgan Bryant also added an RBI single in the fourth.

Farmer (3-1) was pinned with her first loss of the season allowing 12 runs (10 earned) on 11 hits, four walks and a pair of strikeouts in four innings of work.

Hanah Marshal (1-0) earned the win for CNU giving up four runs on four hits, five walks and three strikeouts in a complete-game effort. The Captains scored eight runs via the long ball. Scoop Simon hit a three-run bomb in the second. Brittney Walters added another three-run homer in the fourth, while Rachael Payne hit a two run-shot in the same inning.

Game Two: Christopher Newport 1, William Peace 0
Durham did all she could to give WPU (5-3) a chance to win game two, but Tara Heatwole  stole the spotlight by one-hitting the Pacers in her debut at CNU (2-0).

Durham only surrendered three hits in six innings pitched and one unearned run. Lia Batchelor reached on an error in the second and eventually scored on Jenna Sprinkle's RBI single to right.

Caroline Womble recorded the only hit for the Pacers, a bunt single in the top of the third.

The WPU softball team will be back in action this Friday for a home doubleheader against no. 9 Rowan University starting at 1:00 p.m.

Video Coverage and Live Stats will be available for both contests.
