Women's Basketball Hosts Jackie Ammons Memorial Tournament

The Tournament Will Be Held Friday and Saturday

RALEIGH – William Peace University's women's basketball team will host the Jackie Ammons Memorial Tournament Friday and Saturday at the Hermann Athletic Center. The Pacers will face off against Berry College at 8 p.m. on Friday and will play at either 1 p.m. or 3 p.m. Saturday, depending on the result of the game against Berry.

The Pacers are coming off an 82-62 loss to Lynchburg on Tuesday night. Nadine Ealey led the team with 20 points off the bench in the defeat. Tyler Mercer added 12 points and four steals off the bench, too. The team will look to bounce back against Berry (1-0) on Friday night.

Berry is 1-0 heading into Friday night's matchup with the Pacers. The Vikings defeated Wesleyan 83-49 in a one-sided affair. Berry was led by Alex Weems who earned a double-double in the victory over the wolves. Weems was 5-13 from the floor with eight made free throws and 11 rebounds. The Vikings defense was solid, forcing Wesleyan to a 26.6 field goal percentage.

William Peace will also host Hilbert College (1-0) and Huntingdon College (0-0) in the tournament. The two teams will play at 6 p.m. on Friday with the winner advancing to the championship game at 3 p.m. on Saturday.

The Jackie Ammons Memorial Tournament is in honor of Jackie Ammons. Jackie Lee Ammons was a student at Peace College from 1977-1979, lettered as a starter in basketball two years and volleyball the one year she competed. An outstanding scholar and accomplished athlete whose Christian attributes complimented her college and its athletic program, Jackie was awarded her degree posthumously on May 12, 1979. In recognition of her devotion to Peace College and her significant contributions to its programs and as a token of the love, respect, and appreciation felt by classmates, faculty and administration, Jackie's basketball jersey – Number 44 – was officially retired December 10, 1979.

"Jackie Ammons epitomized the best of American youth and Peace College Students. Vivacious, energetic, dedicated and loving. Jackie was what every father would like his daughter to be. Hopefully the Jackie Ammons Tournament appropriately honors the memory of a very special young woman," Dr. S David Frazier, former Peace College President, said of Ammons.

Live stats and a video feed will be available for each game.
