ELIZABETH CITY, NC – The William Peace University women's basketball team got back on track Friday night, snapping a seven-game skid with a 74-56 win over Mid-Atlantic Christian University.
Alexis Armstrong put WPU (6-12) ahead, 30-18, a couple minutes into the second quarter, but MACU cut their deficit to four by the break, as Kamiah Gilbert fueled a 12-2 spurt over the next five minutes and change. The game was tied at 44 with just over four minutes left in the third, until the Pacers finally pulled away for good with a 25-4 run, extending their lead to as many as 21 points midway through the fourth.
Cassidy Clark was one of four Pacers in double-figures, leading the way with 18 points, four rebounds, three assists and four steals.
Tamara Murphy finished with 12 points and six rebounds.
Susannah Sykes registered 10 points, five rebounds, an assists and a steal, while
Lakeia Jones added 10 points and four boards in only 14 minutes off the bench. Armstrong chipped in seven points along with 10 rebounds and three assists.
WPU shot 41.1% (30-of-73) from the field, their second highest clip of the season, which was thanks in large part to a season high 17 assists. They also dominated the glass, out-rebounding MACU, 49-31, including a season high 24 offensive rebounds for 14 second change points. In addition, the Pacers won the turnover battle for the first time in the last six games, forcing the Mustangs to cough it up 26 times for 24 points at the other end.
Montana Moore paced the way for the Mustangs (2-15) with 16 points, five rebounds and a steal. Gilbert had 15 points, two boards, an assists and a steal. Cham Brice was also in double-figures, scoring 12 point to go with four assists and five steals.
The WPU women's basketball team returns to the Hermann Athletic Center next Wednesday, February 3 when they host the Cougars of Averett University. Tip-off is at 5:30 p.m.
