Women's Hoops Can't Keep up with Cougars

RALEIGH, NC – The William Peace University women's basketball team traveled to Averett University Wednesday night, where the Pacers fell, 78-48.

Susannah Sykes led WPU (5-10, 0-7) with 16 points, seven rebounds, two assists and a steal, which was her fourth consecutive game in double-figures. Tamara Murphy also reached double-figures with 10 points and eight rebounds. Lakeia Jones nearly posted a double-double as well with eight points and 10 boards.

Averett (8-6, 3-3) went wire-to-wire, taking control with a 20-3 run in the first quarter on their way to an 18-point halftime lead. The Cougars added a 10-0 run in the third and an 11-0 spurt in the fourth, squashing any chance of a WPU comeback.

Turnovers plagued the Pacers throughout the game, as they coughed it up 26 times leading to 32 points for the Cougars at the other end. WPU went 31.5% from the field on 17-of-54 shooting, which is 17 fewer shots than Averett, who finished 28-of-71 (39.4%) and 7-of-22 (31.8%) from deep.

Six players for Averett scored at least eight points led by 21 points, four rebounds, an assist, two steals and two blocks for Samm Chandler's.

The WPU women's basketball team will be back on the road Saturday afternoon, traveling to Rocky Mount for a game against North Carolina Wesleyan at 2:00 p.m.
