Scots Slip Past Pacers in Triple-OT Thriller

RALEIGH, NC – The William Peace University women's basketball team hosted Covenant College Friday night, where the Pacers were edged by the Scots in a triple-overtime thriller, 75-71.

Brittany Boykin scored a season high 20 points along with three rebounds and three assists. Freshman Hannah Ericksen posted her second double-double of the season with career highs of 16 points and 11 rebounds. Susannah Sykes finished with 12 points, three rebounds, two assists and four steals. Alexis Armstrong scored four points and grabbed 13 boards to match her career mark.

"We've been battling some injuries, and had a lot of different people step up tonight," said head coach Kelly Johnson "It was a hard fought game. We had our opportunities and like I told them, that's the way we have to play every night."

WPU (5-8, 0-5 USAS) fell behind 19-9 in the first quarter, but the Pacers cut it to four by the break, holding the Scots (4-8, 2-3 USAS) to only three points in the second. Trailing 51-45 with three minutes left in the fourth, Brittany Boykin found the bottom of the net twice, and then Hannah Ericksen capped a 6-0 run that left the score tied at the end of regulation.

Boykin scored five of the Pacers' 10 points in the first overtime, including a triple with 43 second left which resulted in double-overtime. Zhana Gooden provided another five minutes of free basketball in the second overtime period. Covenant went up 69-66 after a 5-0 spurt, but Gooden drained a three with 17 seconds on the clock, as Cassidy Clark found her at the top of the key. WPU scored first in triple-OT, but the Scots closed the Pacers out the rest of the way to escape with the win.

Aleigha Williams and Joanna Smith both notched double-doubles to lead the way for Covenant. Williams finished with 17 points, 10 rebounds, an assist and five steals. Smith added 16 points, 13 boards, five assists and four steals
