DANVILLE, VA – The William Peace Baseball Team was within striking distance, until Averett scored three in the bottom of the eighth, two of which were unearned, propelling them to a 6-2 win in game one of their three-game series.
WPU collected 10 hits to Averett's 11, but the Pacers left 11 runners on base compared to only four for the Cougars. Braxton Lamm singled up the middle to lead off the second and scored an on error committed by the shortstop. Nick Cole led off the top of the ninth with a base hit and eventually scored on Tyler Klinedinst's sac fly.
Despite another quality outing, Wes Dumford (0-6) was pinned with the loss, as he gave up three runs and struck out three in seven innings of work.
Seven different Pacers collected a hit. Christian Neal went 3-for-4, while Travis Arthur chipped in with two hits as well.
Taylor Davis (5-1) went the distance for the win and struck out seven. Kevin Alvarez led the way offensively, going 3-for-4 with three RBI and a run scored. Timothy Coston went 3-for-4 and drove in a pair.
The Pacers will be back at Averett tomorrow for a doubleheader starting at noon. Live Stats will be available for both games.
