ROCKY MOUNT, NC – The William Peace Softball Team came up one win short of a USA South Conference Tournament Championship on Sunday. Coming out of the loser's bracket, the Pacers took down LaGrange, 10-4, to force a second game before falling to the Panthers in the championship game, 11-1.
WPU placed four Pacers on the All-Tournament Team, including Morgan Farmer as the designated player, Shay Poteat behind the plate, Lindsey Wiggins at third base and Heather Dindinger in the circle.
Game One: William Peace 10, LaGrange 4
Trailing 3-0 after four innings, WPU batted around in the fifth and busted out for 10 runs on nine hits, as the Pacers went on to win, 10-4.
Heather Dindinger (9-5) shouldered the load for the Pacers once again, earning her fifth win since Friday. Dindinger allowed three runs on seven hits and two strikeouts before giving way to Lauren Martin.
At the plate, Caroline Womble went 2-for-3 with three RBIs and a run scored, while Shay Poteat went 3-for-4 with an RBI and two runs scored. Michelle Sheldon-Gregorio also chipped in with two hits and a run scored. Brandi Stamey added a hit, two RBIs and a run scored. Morgan Farmer contributed a hit, an RBI and a run scored.
Olivia Wolfe (12-9) was tacked with the loss, giving up six runs on five hits in four innings of work. Tournament MVP Dani Gravett dropped a pair of bombs to lead LaGrange at the plate. Wolfe also homered.
Game Two: LaGrange 11, William Peace 1—5 innings
LaGrange (23-14) scored seven runs in the top of the first and never looked back. The Pacers let up four unearned runs in the fifth and fell, 11-1.
Lauren Martin (7-3) was tagged with loss, giving up three runs on three hits without recording an out. Wiggins collected two of WPU's four hits to go along with an RBI.
Gravett (9-1) went the distance for the win, surrendering on run on four hits and three walks. It was Wolfe that homered twice this game and racked up five RBIs. Gravett also hit her third dinger of the day to go along a pair of runs knocked in and two runs scored.
After being picked to finish ninth in the conference, WPU ends the year as the conference runner up with an overall record of 23-15-1.
