FAYETTEVILLE, NC – The William Peace Baseball Team dropped a pair of games at Methodist University this afternoon. The Pacers fell in game one, 8-1, followed by a 10-1 loss in game two.
Game One: Methodist 8, William Peace 1
Methodist struck first in the bottom of the fourth, but the Pacers evened the score in their next at-bat. Braxton Lamm singled to right field and eventually came home to score on Nick Cole's RBI single up the middle.
The Monarchs scored five runs in the bottom of the fifth though and two more in the sixth, which was more than enough, as WPU only managed one more hit the rest of the way and totaled four hits for the game.
Tyler Klinedinst, Trevor Nanney, Lamm, and Cole each singled for the Pacers. Christian Neal (1-3) was pinned with loss, giving up six runs on 10 hits and four strikeouts.
Seven different Monarchs registered multiple hits, including a 3-for-4 outing from Chris Power, while Josh Howard (4-0) earned the win, allowing one run in eight innings pitched.
Game Two: Methodist 10, William Peace 1
Mike Sgroi got the start in game two for WPU (1-14, 1-13 USAS), but struggled to find the strike zone, helping Methodist (12-7, 6-5 USAS) to break out for an eight run bottom of the first. The Pacers did push across a run in the seventh after Hunter Allen walked and scored on Travis Arthur's RBI groundout.
Sgroi (0-3) gave up eight runs on three hits and six walks for the loss. Chase Roupp pitched well in relief, giving up two runs, both of which were unearned, on three hits and six strikeouts in seven innings of work. At the plate, Neal went 2-for-3 with a double, while Trey Hathaway, Brian Willis and Arthur each chipped in with one hit apiece.
Travis Johnson (3-1) was credited with the win for Methodist, surrendering four hits and striking out eight in six scoreless innings of work. Powers led the way at the plate again, going 2-for-3 with a pair of RBI and a run scored.
