Guilford Gets Two Wins over WPU Softball

GREENSBORO, NC – The William Peace softball team dropped both games of a double-header at Guilford this afternoon. The Pacers fell, 8-5, in first game followed by a 9-7, five-inning loss in game two.

Game One: Guilford 8, William Peace 5

Guilford hit a two-run homerun in the first and added three more in the second to jump ahead, 5-0. The Pacers trailed, 8-3 heading into the 7th, until Morgan Bryant cut their deficit to two with a bases loaded double. Heather McLean and Shay Poteat both singled and scored, but it's as close as WPU would get.

Morgan Farmer (1-1) was pinned with the loss, giving up eight runs on nine hits, six walks and five strikeouts. McLean led the Pacers at the plate, going 2-for-2 with a pair of walks and two runs scored. WPU drew nine walks in addition to their six hits and left 11 runners on base.

Maggie Shaffer (1-1) earned the win, allowing three runs on three hits and four strikeouts. Marty Wilcox went 2-for-2 with a pair of walks, three RBI and two runs scored. Wilcox, Caroline Barnette and Rachel Howard each homered for Guilford.

Game Two: Guilford 9, William Peace 7

Just like in game one, Guilford (3-1) jumped on top in their first two at-bats to the tune of three runs in the first and six in the second. WPU (1-2-1) scored two in the fourth and five in the seventh, but it wasn't enough.

Casey Taylor went 3-for-3 at the plate with a run scored, while Shay Poteat and Morgan Bryant both went 2-for-3.  Poteat drove in a run and scored one. Bryant drove in a pair and scored a run. Lindsey Wiggins also added a two RBI double.  Heather Dindinger was tacked with the loss, allowing eight runs on eight hits in two innings of work.

For Guilford, Laura Hall went 2-for-3 with two runs scored. Casey Snead threw 2.2 innings and didn't allow a run.

The WPU softball team will return to the field next Friday at home for a double-header against Rowan starting at 2:00 p.m.
