Game Recap: Softball |

William Peace Softball Swept by No. 5 Christopher Newport

RALEIGH, NC – The William Peace University Softball Team took on no. 5 Christopher Newport Wednesday afternoon at Meredith College, where the Pacers dropped the first game, 5-0, followed by  an 8-2 loss in game two.

Game One: Christopher Newport 5, William Peace 0

Three of CNU's first four batters walked to load the bases with one out. WPU had a chance to escape with minimal damage after Tori Clarke singled the other way for the Captain's first run. Morgan Farmer struck out her second batter of the inning, but a wild pitch plated another CNU run, and a dropped fly ball that should have ended the inning cost the Pacers two more.

Despite holding the Captains to only one more run in the third, WPU couldn't get the bats going. Five different Pacers chipped in with one hit a piece, including Lindsey Wiggins, Farmer, Heather McLean, Brandi Stamey and Shay Poteat.

Farmer (1-2) pitched well after a rough first inning, but she was pinned with the loss, allowing five runs (three earned) on seven hits, five walks and seven strikeouts in seven innings of work.

Krista Lewis (1-1) went the distance for CNU. Alexis Pope carried the load offensively, going 3-for-4 with an RBI.

Game Two: Christopher Newport 8, William Peace 2

Starting pitcher Heather Dindinger (0-2) came out of the gates throwing it well. She only gave up one run through her first three innings of work, but CNU (2-1) cranked two out of the yard for a four-run fourth and a 5-0 lead. Dindinger took the loss, letting up five runs on six hits, two walks and two strikeouts.

Michaela Fox belted a two-run bomb to dead center in the bottom of the fifth, but it wasn't nearly enough, as WPU (1-4-1) was held to only four hits in game two. Caroline Womble and Poteat each singled, while Heather McLean added a double in the final frame.

Hanah Marshall (1-0) threw a complete game and struck out seven to pick up the win for CNU. Rachael Payne led CNU's lineup, going 2-for-3 with three RBI and two runs scored.  Payne, Clarke and Meagan Jones all homered for the Captains.

WPU Softball will be back in action this weekend for a pair of conference doubleheaders. The Pacers host Huntingdon on Saturday followed by LaGrange on Sunday.
