Women's Soccer Snaps Skid vs Mary Baldwin

CARY, NC – The William Peace University women's soccer team was back at WakeMed Soccer Park Friday afternoon, where the Pacers snapped a three-game losing skid with a 4-1 win over the Fighting Squirrels of Mary Baldwin.

Alyssa Gasperini led WPU (6-9-2, 4-6 USAS) with a pair of goals, which ties her for the team lead with five. Amelia Melching found Gasperini in the 35th minute, as she beat a pair of defenders before putting it in from just inside the 18. Gasperini made it 2-0 in the 49th with the help of Ashley Johnson.

Caylin Yarbrough scored her first goal of the season in the 52nd with Mari Mitterling getting credit for the assist, her first of the year. Melching made it 4-1 in the 85th minute on the pass from Brittany Bolin. It was Melching's second goal of the season and Bolin's first career assist.

Mary Baldwin (3-12, 0-10 USAS) did break through with a goal in the 77th thanks to a defensive miscue committed by the Pacers, but they never posed a significant threat. WPU outshout the Fighting Squirrels, 15-5, and held a 4-0 edge in corner kicks.

"We'll take a win, which continues to add to our program record this season, but it's frustrating that we can't come out and finish a team early," said head coach Keith Jenkins. "We finally did get it going in the second half, but we have two games left and have to win at least one, otherwise we'll be watching from home the rest of the year."

The WPU women's soccer team turns around on short rest, hosting the Scots of Covenant College tomorrow at 2:00 p.m. The Pacers close out the regular season at home next Wednesday, October 28 at 5:00 p.m. against Averett University.

Live video coverage and live stats will be available for both matches.
