CARY, NC – The William Peace University men's soccer team was back at WakeMed Soccer Park Thursday evening, where the Pacers fell, 3-0, to the Rams of Columbia International University.
WPU (2-14) allowed all three goals in the first half before tightening things up in the second. CIU (6-6-1) struck first in the 5th minute, as Mitchell Roberts collected the rebound off Daniel Miele's shot and put it away. Guillermo Arce-Ruiz found Daniel Mallard in the 21st minute, and then Alex Hacket scored off Braden Elmer's corner kick in the 43rd.
The Pacers did play significantly better in the second half, but weren't able to put one up on the board. WPU took six shots compared to CIU's seven and also held a 3-2 edge in corner kicks after failing to even attempt a shot in the first half.
"Our bench was a little short tonight, so we had some guys in different spots and then had a couple others go down during the match," said head coach
Caleb Husmann. "All things considered, I think we played better than what the final score indicated, but we definitely have to pick it up heading into our final two regular season matches of the year"
With two more matches to go, the WPU men's soccer team is currently holding onto the eighth and final spot for the league's upcoming conference tournament. The Pacers host Covenant College this Saturday at 3:00 p.m., before closing the season against Averett University next Wednesday, October 28 at 7:00 p.m.
