MARTINSVILLE, VA – The William Peace University women's soccer team was back in action on Wednesday, as the Pacers traveled to face Ferrum College and earned a 1-0 victory.
Senior
Mari Mitterling came through for the Pacers in the 21st minute, putting away what proved to be the game winner. Mitterling's score came unassisted, as she beat multiple defenders before burying her second goal of the season and the 12th of her career.
"They came out and pressed us hard, but what a superb individual effort from Mari that shifted the momentum and settled us down," said head coach
Keith Jenkins. "They had us on our heels for much of the second half, but everyone contributed and did what they needed to for us to gut out the win."
Ferrum (6-4, 1-4 USAS) took 17 more shots that the Pacers (20-3) but only put six of them on frame, all of which were saved by goalkeeper
Shannon Maddex. Mitterling's score was the only WPU shot on goal, but it's all they needed to come away with the victory.
The Pacers improve to 4-5-1 overall with a 3-2 record in the USA South, slotting them fifth in the current standings. Already this season, the Pacers have matched their 2014 win total and surpassed their win total in conference play.
Assuming there are no schedule changes for inclement weather caused by Hurricane Joaquin, the WPU women's soccer team is slated for a pair of matches this weekend. The Pacers host Methodist University on Saturday and travel to non-conference opponent Sweet Briar College on Sunday. Both matches are set to kick-off at 2:00 p.m.
