CARY, NC – After a scoreless opening half against the Pride of Greensboro College, things went south in a hurry for the William Peace women's soccer team. They were issued a red card two minutes into the second half to go a man down, and then Greensboro scored a minute later as they went on to down the Pacers, 2-0.
Elizabeth Torres took the free kick after the card was assessed and found Allison Gibson for Greensboro's first goal in the 48th minute. Alannah Haggerty made it 2-0 with a score in the 68th.
The Pride (7-5-1, 5-2-1 USAS) ended up with 14 second half shots, nine of which were on goal, compared to only one shot in the second for William Peace (3-11-1, 1-7 USAS). Shannon Maddex faced 15 shots on target during the game and saved 13 of them.
"Our girls put so much heart and effort into tonight's match, and it's unfortunate that one call completely changed the game," said head coach Keith Jenkins. "As far as tonight, we saw positives we haven't seen all year…It's going to be tough for us to make the conference tournament at this point, but I just feel like we are very close to turning the corner."
WPU women's soccer returns to action at 3:00 p.m. this Saturday as they host the Battling Bishops of NC Wesleyan where they will honor their two seniors, Devin Thompson and Jessica Littleton.
