Smith Hits Walk-Off Grand Slam As Pacers Split With Greensboro

RALEIGH, NC -- William Peace University softball split a doubleheader with Greensboro College. The Pacers fell 4-2 in game one before coming back to win 11-2 in game two, with Candice Smith recording a walk-off homerun in the bottom of the 6th for the win.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Game One

The Pride would gain an early 2-0 lead at the top of the first after loading the bases to walk in two runs. A homerun at the top of the third from Kassie Simmons would put them up 3-1. In the bottom of the third, Nadia Pittman would add her own home run to cut the lead to 3-1. At the top of the fourth, Kailey Walker would double to left field to score Caroline Stanley and put the Pride up 4-1. Logan Ayers would hit a homerun at the top of the 5th to bring the score to 4-2, but the Pacers would be unable to complete a rally and would fall 4-2.

Game Two
At the top of the first, a fielding error would put the Pride up 1-0. A sacrifice fly from Candice Smith in the bottom of the first would tie it 1-1 as she sent Dara Orr across home plate. Megan McAnany's single to right field would bring in Adanya Day for a 2-1 Pacer lead, while a double from Preston Hawkins would score McAnany to put the Pacers up 3-1. 

At the top of the 3rd, Hannah King would drive in Ivy Ray to cut the Pacer lead to 3-2. The Pacers would respond in the bottom of the 4th as a homerun from Anna Suggs would put them up 4-2. In the bottom of the 5th, Candice Smith would hit her own homerun to score two for a 6-2 lead. Adayna Day would follow Smith to hit another one over the fence for a 7-2 lead. In the bottom of the sixth, the Pacers would load the bases before Candice Smith would add her second homerun of the day for a walkoff grandslam, sealing the game 11-2 for the Pacers.

PACER TOP PERFORMERS
FOR THE FOES
  • Cheyanne Cox tallied 10 strikeouts in game one.
  • Caroline Stanley went 2 for 4 in game one and 1 for 3 in game two.
