Raleigh, NC -- William Peace University Softball split their home doubleheader against nationally ranked #4 Christopher Newport University on Tuesday afternoon. The Pacers would lose the first game in a shutout 0-7 as the Captains used a six run second inning to jump out to an early lead. In game two, the Pacers would come out on top in a pitchers duel. Katherine Murphy would go the distance and pick up the win as she only allowed 2 runs on 3 hits.
THE BASICS
HOW IT HAPPENED
Game One - The Captains would jump out to an early lead as an offensive explosion, which would be capped off by a two run homerun. The Captains scored all six runs in the top of the second inning. The Captains would add an insurance run in the top of the sixth inning as an RBI single scored Jules Donnelly. The Captains would hold the Pacers in the bottom of the seventh and take game one 7-0.
Game Two - Game two would see a pitcher's duel between Katherine Murphy and Gracie Vallejos. In the second inning, the Pacers would get on the board and take an early 1-0 lead as an error from the second baseman would see Lauren Conway score. The Pacers would add two more runs in the bottom of the second inning. Nadia Pittman would steal home on a double steal to widen the Pacer's lead to 2-0. An RBI single from Taylor Ferguson would cap off the three run inning for the Pacers as it would bring home Logan Ayers. The rest of the game would be evenly matched as both teams' pitchers would hold the bats at bay. The next scoring opportunity would come in the top of the seventh inning as the Captains would try to mount a comeback. An RBI single from Caroline Helmer would cut the Pacers lead to 3-1. With runners on second and third and 1 out Keely Crittende would pop up to the shortstop but would be enough to bring Bailey Roberts home, making the score 3-2. Katherine Murphy would however close the door on the comeback bid as she would get Caroline Pollock to pop up to first base and seal the 3-2 win over the Captains in game two.
