Softball Drops Double-header To NC Wesleyan

Raleigh, NC--- The William Peace University Softball team dropped both games to North Carolina Wesleyan in a USA South Double-header on sunday afternoon.

Game 1:

In the first inning Meredith Mize tripled to start the inning for the Bishops. The next batter grounded out to Alexa Nemeth who threw Meredith Mize out at home. Beth Braswell singled bring in a run for the Bishops making the score (1-0) Jordan Magnum walked to begin the bottom of the inning and would move over to third base after a couple pass balls. The Bishops would hold the Pacers in the bottom of the inning. In the top of the third inning the Bishops added three more runs. Beth Braswell collected another hit and RBI. With bases loaded, Hannah Ivester doubled to center field scoring two runs. The Pacers struggled to advance runners in the game and would leave nine runners on base. In the top of the sixth inning the Bishops scored two runs off another Beth Braswell single. William Peace had one more opportunity to put some runs on the board in the bottom of the seventh. Heather McLean led off the bottom of the inning with a base hit followed by a Nadia Blevins bunt single. The Pacers would leave bases loaded  after a pop up to third base ended the game. NC Wesleyan would take the first of two games by a final score of (6-0).

 

THE RUNDOWN:

  • Nadia Blevens had two hits, two stolen bases, and a walk

  • Alexa Nemeth went 2-3 with two singles

  • Danielle Hunt came in relief and struck out two batters with the bases loaded.

The Foes:

  • Beth Braswell pitched a complete game and did not give up a run. She had eight strikeouts and improves her record to (5-2). Aside from her outstanding pitching she had three hits and four RBIs.

  • Hannah Ivester had two hits and two RBIs and Meredith Mize also collected two hits and scored twice.

 

Game 2:

In today's second game, after a single by the Bishops, the Pacers would turn a great double play to end the inning . NC Wesleyan continued the aggressive at bats as Beth Braswell doubled on the first pitch of the top of the second inning. Shelby Godwin singled and scored the first run of the game. Chelsea Nixon also singled in the second inning scoring a run bringing the score 2-0. In the bottom of the second Alexa Nemeth singled into center field followed by Lauren Conway reaching on a walk. With runners on first and second, Kacy Haithcock would lay down a sac bunt, moving the runners to second and third with one out. Although the Pacers had runners in scoring position, they were unable to score. Olivia Oats would lead off the third inning  with a big double to center field. Kristina Mojica would single to home Oates bringing the score to (2-1). NC Wesleyan would answer in the fourth as Shelby Godwin singled to left followed by a Nichole Mooney double which scored Godwin. Meredith Smith followed with another double which brought home Nichole Mooney. The hits continued as the Bishops would score four runs in the top of the fourth. The Pacers would later add four runs of their own in the bottom of the sixth. Alexa Nemeth would start the top of the inning with a walk, followed by a Lauren Conway infield single. After a pair of  outs, Mackenzie Allison would draw a walk to load the bases. Olivia Oates would come up to bat and draw a walk of her own to score Nemeth . The Pacers would clear the bases thanks to a big double by Hayley Waddell, which scored three runs making the score (6-5). Although the Pacers would come within one, The Bishops scored one more run in the top of the seventh inning. WPU would leave bases loaded the bottom of the seventh ending the game. Final score from game two in Raleigh was (7-5).

THE RUNDOWN:

  • Alexa Nemeth had two hits and scored a run.

  • Seven Pacers had a hit in the second game of the double header.

    Hayley Waddell had a game high three RBI

 

The Foes:

  • Shelby Godwin had three hits and scored one run.

  • Nichole Mooney and Peyton Hyler both had two hits.

 

What's Next?

The William Peace University softball team will travel to Myrtle Beach for the Fast Pitch Dreams Spring Classic and will be taking on Randolph College on March 6th. William Peace comes into this matchup with a record of (5-7) and (2-2) in conference play.
