RALEIGH, N.C. -- The WPU women's soccer team came up short to the Panthers in the final minutes of overtime Saturday afternoon, with a final score of 1-0. The Pacers drop to (1-4) overall.

The Pacers fought hard against LaGrange College in a game that ultimately came down to a golden goal in the 96th minute. Both the Panthers and the Pacers were unable to get on the scoreboard during the 90 minutes of regular play. Although the Pacers seemed to be able to get down to the attacking half of the field more than the Panthers during the first half, they were not able to capitalize. The pace of the game noticeably slowed down during the second half, and the Panthers were able to create more opportunities on goal.

Freshman Jackie Yanez shared her thoughts after the game, "Overall, I thought our effort was good and we played better in the first half, creating the majority of our opportunities. Unfortunately, I think the heat and lack of depth got the better of us in the second half and overtime, so we were unable to continue to play at our best late in the game."

Despite it seeming to be an evenly matched game, LaGrange was able to put an end to the game in overtime with a shot from right inside the eighteen. There was a strong defensive effort made by the Pacers throughout both periods and overtime.

"It was a disappointing result, but I thought we played well and competed well. I'm proud of the effort the team continues to give and thankful to have a very resilient and positive team," shared Head Coach, Mary Puckett.

Next up for the William Peace Women's Soccer team, the Pacers will begin conference play next weekend by taking on Methodist University and Salem College. The Monarchs are (1-6) overall while the Spirits of Salem College are (4-2).
