Box Score SWEET BRIAR, VA -- WPU Women's Soccer took on Sweet Briar College in their season opener and defeated the Vixens 1-0. The Pacers open the season with the victory and Head Coach Mary Puckett notches her first career win with the Pacers.

"I thought the team did really well to adjust to the weather and being on the road for our first game. We had to use a completely different style of play than what we had been training for but I think the girls adjusted really well. I'm super excited about our start and excited about where we're going next," expressed Head Coach, Mary Puckett.

The Pacers proved to have several offensive opportunities with 10 shots, 5 of those being shots on goal. Senior midfielder, Katie Hodges tallied 6 of the 10 shots and contributed the solo goal in the first half that would result in the Pacers victory. This marked the first goal of the season for Hodges as well as the first goal since she was a freshman.

"I feel like the team did a great job considering the weather conditions and it being our first game of the season on the road, and with a new coach, who we are really thankful for. We're all off to a great start and we will continue to grow as the season goes on," shared Katie Hodges after the game.

Freshman goalie, Jackie Yanez made 5 saves in net for the Pacers. The Pacers defense held the Vixens to just 2 shot attempts in the first half. Sweet Briar finished with seven shots total.

The Pacers will look to maintain their momentum as they travel to Greensboro, North Carolina for a non-conference match-up against the Quakers of Guilford College, on Sunday, September 3. Kick-off will be at 1p.m. The contest Sunday will be a season opener for the Quakers.
