LAGRANGE, GA – The William Peace University women's soccer team traveled to LaGrange College on Saturday for their conference opener, where they won in dramatic fashion. Freshman
Alyssa Gasperini scored the game-winner and only goal of the match with five seconds left in regulation, as the Pacers improve to 2-3-1 overall and 1-0 in the USA South.
With the clock winding down,
Ashley Piers lofted a ball into the attacking third for Gasperini, who ran onto it and popped it right over the goalkeeper and into the net. The goal was Gasperini's third of the season, which is tops on the team, while Piers recorded her first assist of the season.
"We finally put together a full 90 minutes, and for once it feels like, the ball finally bounced our way" said head coach
Keith Jenkins. "Alyssa just stayed so composed, even as a freshman, and put it in."
While LaGrange (1-5, 0-1 USAS) did manage to take more shots than WPU (11-4),
Brittany Bolin and
Shannon Maddex combined to stop 10 shots for the shutout. Bolin recorded a career high seven saves, all of which came in the opening half, and Maddex added three more.
"Both of our keepers were outstanding today…defensively, we were solid, and our midfield continues to carry the load controlling the tempo, and winning balls to set us up," Jenkins added. "Hopefully we can carry this momentum into tomorrow with a similar effort."
The WPU women's soccer team turns around on short rest tomorrow with a 12:00 p.m. match at Huntingdon College (2-3, 0-1 USAS).
Live video coverage and Live Stats will be available for the contest.
